Course Description
Self-regulation impacts everyday skill performance and learning. Self-regulation represents the ability to plan, control and monitor behavior across several levels of function (e.g., motor, physiological, social-emotional, cognitive). It is integral for the ability to carry out goal-directed actions in the context of functional tasks. Self-regulation is also important in the development and maintenance of physical health and well-being in childhood and across the lifespan. Self-regulation is associated with functional abilities performance and learning, school readiness, academic achievement, healthy behavior, physical health, and mental health.
For children with cerebral palsy and developmental coordination disorder, self-regulation is important to maximize on their motor and executive functioning abilities and engage successfully in learning and carrying out functional tasks in their daily occupations. In this course, we will examine best practices in the school setting primarily and will introduce ideas for home and community environments.
This course presents underlying processes of sensory, cognitive control, and emotional regulation. The course will focus on evidence-based clinical assessments, goal setting, and treatment strategies for school age children (5-12 years). Clinical examples and cases will be incorporated to apply the course concepts.
Course format
This is a two-day, virtual interactive live webinar that will engage the participants in experiential learning and clinical case studies to incorporate the course content in participants’ clinical experience and practice (14 contact hours)
Course Instructor
Dr. Dimitropoulou, is an expert with more than 25 years of clinical experience. She is an Assistant Professor at Columbia University and a researcher focusing on enhancing functional abilities and participation in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy and developmental coordination disorders. Her research examines the role of self-regulation in how children select their actions when they engage in daily tasks and how these processes impact functional performance and learning. Her work supports the development of outcomes that can measure performance and learning, and complex interventions that can be implemented in natural settings (school, home, community).
