Course Description
This orientation provides an overview of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program and important regulatory compliance information for faculty, researchers and Visiting Student Interns with visa sponsorship through Columbia University.
This course also includes information on resources available to assist J-1 Exchange Visitors and their accompanying family with the transition to Columbia University and to life in the U.S.
The orientation must be completed after the DS-2019 has been issued and before checking-in with the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) upon arrival.
Once the orientation is completed, a J-1 Orientation Certificate of Completion will be sent to the email address used to access this course.
This certificate is a required document to be uploaded when completing the SEVIS Arrival Report with ISSO.

- The purpose and significant components of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program
- Their visa documents and why and when they are needed
- Medical insurance coverage requirements set by the Department of State
- Arrival notification requirements and other important processes upon entry to the U.S.
- How to maintain immigration compliance in the U.S.
- How to access campus and community resources, join ISSO events, and stay informed

- Module 1: Introduction to the ISSO and the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program
This module introduces the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) and the purpose and mission of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program.
- Module 2: Preparing for Your Exchange Visitor Program
This module offers an overview of Form DS-2019, the process for obtaining a J-1/J-2 entry visa, the 212(e) home residency requirement, and health insurance coverage necessities.
- Module 3: Getting Started: Your Arrival and First Weeks
This module provides resources to assist with the transition to Columbia and life in the U.S., guidance on entering the U.S., the process for reporting your arrival to ISSO, and obtaining a Social Security Number (SSN).
- Module 4: International Travel
This module covers travel validation signatures on Form DS-2019, documentation needed to return from a trip abroad, and automatic revalidation.
- Module 5: Guidelines to Maintaining Status
This module provides an overview of immigration compliance, guidelines for conducting incidental lectures or consultations, and rules for maintaining the status of J-2 dependent family members.
- Module 6: Program Extensions, Transfers and Departure
This module outlines the eligibility requirements, processes, and timelines for program extensions, transferring J-1 sponsorship, the grace period, preparing for departure, and J-1 restrictions on repeat participation.
- Module 7: Tax Obligations
This module offers an overview of the U.S. tax year and tax filing season, explains the purpose of a tax return and Form 8843, introduces resources for filing a non-resident tax return, and explains tax treaty benefits.
- Module 8: Resources and Staying Informed
This module provides an overview of campus and community resources; ISSO programs and resources for scholars, partners, and families; as well as ISSO newsletters, social media, and contact information.
Instructors
Jane Acton is the designated program official (Responsible Officer) for Columbia University’s J-1 Exchange Visitor Program, overseeing its administration, compliance, and commitment to international educational and cultural exchange.
As Director of Faculty and Scholar Services at the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO), she works with a team of ISSO Directors and ISSO advising staff across Columbia University campuses to provide expert immigration guidance, a robust slate of programming initiatives, and a welcoming and supportive environment for international students, researchers, scholars and their accompanying family.
